Pocket sized, it is beautifully printed and an excellent showcase for Matt Curtis’s wonderful photography. I’ve long been a fan of what this fella does with a camera, and there are some delights on this book.
The premises is simple: pen portraits of 52 London pubs which are outstanding in at least one particular field. Architecturally interesting perhaps, serving consistently high-quality beer, or known for strong community spirit. Many venues will be familar to the beer lover, such as The Harp, in Covent Garden, or The Southampton Arms, in Kentish Town. Other were new to me, but have since been placed on a bucket list of ‘must visits’ next time in the capital.
