No vaccine passports will be required for visits to re-opened pubs, the press is speculating today.
In an update tomorrow, it is thought prime minister Boris Johnson will announce a new NHS app, confirming that the holder has had the jab. And while this will be needed for ceratin cultural and sporting events (or proof of a negative test or having had covid), it will not be necessary for hospitality.
“The prime minister will announce that a new NHS app will be set up to record people’s vaccine status,” reports The Sunday Times. “For those without smartphones, a paper certificate will be produced, which will also be given to those with medical exemptions or for whom repeat testing is inappropriate.”
Mail Online said: “Despite polling suggesting the public wants [the app] to be used in pubs and restaurants, Mr Johnson is believed to have omitted them amid widespread political and industry opposition.
“Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer had branded ‘passports for pints’ un-British and suggested Labour could vote against them. A hardcore of more than 40 Tories had also threatened to rebel, potentially enough to defeat the government in the Commons.”
