Thornbridge is to unveil a new beer created on its Burton union system at next week’s Great British Beer Festival Winter, being staged in Rotherham.
1838 is named after the year Peter Walker patented the unique fermentation system. The 4.5% ABV premium pale ale blends Maris Otter malt with Savinjski Goldings hops to create a full-bodied beer with a light amber hue.
Expect rich, biscuity malt flavours, balanced by floral hop notes and a crisp, refreshing finish, says Thornbridge.
The use of the union system in its historic location ceased last year, but owner Carlsberg Marston gifted a set to Thornbridge, and helped the Bakewell brewer get the equipment installed.
It has been in active use ever since, including for a special batch of Jaipur IPA, and collaborations with Odell Brewing and The Kernel.
Following the installation, Thornbridge introduced The Union, a classic-style IPA crafted with British ingredients, into their core range. The beer has been met with widespread acclaim in both bottle and cask. Building on this success, 1838 now becomes a second core Union brand.
As part of the GBBF launch, Thornbridge will host a tasting with beer writer Roger Protz on Thursday, 13th February. They will also run a Discovery Bar theday after, and maintain a Brewery Bar, featuring both cask and keg options, throughout the festival.
Great British Beer Festival Winter is at Magna Science Adventure Centre, in Rotherham, from 12th-15th February.
