The Guild of Beer Sommeliers, which was relaunched last year, has now set out the programme to become a beer sommelier.
Apart from having the experience and the communication skills to become a beer sommelier, candidates must have taken and passed four courses:
- Cellar management
- WSET Level 2 in beer
- Beerand food matching
- How to judge beer and understanding off flavours
The final part of the process is an interview to assess the person’s ability to talk and communicate about beer.
“To become a beer sommelier the person must be passionate about the subject and able to pass on their knowledge with enthusiasm,” said chief examiner Alex Barlow. “The thirst for knowledge for beer needs to be met.”
