Dartmoor Brewery, England’s highest brewery, is celebrating its 30th anniversary of crafting award-winning traditional ales from its home in Princetown.

Dartmoor Jail Ale XXX

To commemorate the special occasion, the brewery has unveiled Jail Ale XXX, a limited-edition beer that pays tribute to the legacy of its iconic Jail Ale while offering a fresh, bold twist.

Brewing operations began modestly in 1994, to the rear of the Prince of Wales pub, in Princetown. The brewery’s flagship ale, Jail Ale, was inspired by its close proximity to the historic Dartmoor Prison. It has become a favourite among real ale enthusiasts across the South West and beyond.

However, with rapidly growing demand for Jail Ale, Dartmoor Brewery expanded to its current purpose-built facility, enabling greater production capacity while staying true to its roots in the rugged Dartmoor landscape.

In addition to Jail Ale, the brewery’s portfolio includes popular offerings such as Dartmoor IPA, Legend, and the black treacle-infused Dragon’s Breath, which was initially launched as a winter ale, but has since become a year-round favourite.

With the increasing demand for low- and no-alcohol options, the brewery introduced Dartmoor Zero in 2023 to great success.

Deep pride

Jail Ale XXX is a bold and full-bodied limited-edition ale. The deep amber beer boasts light red hues and delivers a balanced flavour profile. It offers notes of malted fruits, citrus, and orange, and a slightly sweet caramel finish.

It is hopped with Northdown, Challenger, Northern Brewer, and Goldings varieties, balanced with a blend of pale, Crystal, and wheat malts. It comes in at 6% ABV.

“Our 30-year anniversary is a magnificent opportunity to celebrate not only the deep pride we have in our successful Devon business, but also the strong loyalty of our customers, our excellent local suppliers, and our hard-working team,” said managing director Ian Cobham.

“Our beers have long been enjoyed in excellent local pubs across the South West, and with our distribution now spreading further afield, this also provides an excellent platform for promoting Devon’s quality image and proposition far and wide.”
