A female brewing pioneer born in the 18th century is being championed in a contest to find a new statue celebrating local women in Dorset.
Sarah Eldridge (1791-1873, inset above) was one of the founders of Eldridge Pope & Co. She was highly signficant as a trailblazing woman in a male-dominated world.
She established the brewery, with husband Charles, in 1837, and the business thrived. However, when Charles died in 1846, Sarah assumed full control of the business. Her determination, business acumen, and leadership skills allowed to successfully expand the brewery.
Sarah’s impact extended to the community as well. She played a pivotal role in the establishment of Dorchester’s first hospital.
Dorchester Sheroes aims to find the most appropriate woman as the subject of a new statue. Sarah is one of six finalists. Find out more here and then vote here.
