Joule’s Brewery has given an update on a £1 million project to develop its base in its home town of Market Drayton, Shropshire.

A key focus will be turning the site into a community hub. There are also plans to increase the capacity of the brewery and to improve the taphouse, the Red Lion.

The pub dates back to 1623 and is a grade II listed building. Space in the main bar will be increased, and the kitchen and dining area will be enhanced.

Some of this work will be made possible as Joule’s relocates its special occasion space to the Stags Head at the brewery, a new sister pub. This will be adapted to hold local events, showcase the brewery, host tours, and hold brewery archive material.

In the brewery itself there will be investment in dual-purpose vessels and ageing tanks.

“We are delighted to be investing in the brewery and creating additional jobs in the town of Market Drayton,” said Vicky Colclough, operations director at Joule’s Brewery.

“It also offers us the chance to invest in our flagship taphouse the Red Lion Inn, which also adjoins the brewery.  This investment will give us some vital extra capacity which we need as we grow.

“This news also marks our total and unequivocal commitment to Shropshire and to our home town of Market Drayton, some good and welcome news for the hospitality sector.”

Public consultations on the designs will be held this spring.
