Lanarkshire microbrewery Outlandish has created a special beer for a festival celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of the film Local Hero.

Outlandish Local Hero

Festival planners initially hoped to secure Brewdog, whose brand was born in Aberdeenshire where the event is taking place. But the tie-up never materialised.

“We hoped Brewdog might produce a special edition Local Hero beer, given its global HQ is just 26 miles away from famed filming location Pennan, the tiny village used as a set for the 1983 iconic Scottish film,” said festival director Andrew Mellon.

“James Watt [Brewdog’s co-founder] could have been crowned a real ‘local hero’ by bringing his extraordinary runaway success back to the area where he grew up and built his brand.”

Instead, the opportunity fell to Outlandish, owned and run by brothers Ronnie and Kenny Lees. They teamed up with the famous Pennan Inn to create the Local Hero brew. The brothers made the pale ale and Pennan Inn owner Monika designed and created the Local Hero label for it. The inn will open its bar from 20th April until the end of the festival in late May to offer the new creation.

The festival run from 6th-27th May. Find out more about it here.
