The future of cask — and of bitter, in particular — looks safe as more of the younger breweries get on board with the style.

UnBarred Best Bitter

UnBarred Brewery goes suitably retro with the can artwork for its new release, Best Bitter, which comes in at 4.6% ABV. Look, there’s even a dimpled pint mug in the photo!

Head brewer and founder Jordan, and lead brewer Gary, each have routes in traditional brewing, despite UnBarred’s great craft credentials. They share a love and respect for heritage styles.

UnBarred describes Best Bitter as “southern in character”, made with a combination of British heritage malts and locally-sourced Fuggles and East Kent Goldings hops.

“Our personal touch comes from our house yeast strain, creating a welcome addition of gentle fruity esters,” say the brewers.

The beer is smooth and nutty with gentle caramel malt at its heart, and a balanced palate of floral notes, hedgerow, and freshly-cut green grass. Copper in colour, it has a smooth mouthfeel.
