The new home of St Ives Brewery has launched, on the Marsh Lane Industrial Estate, in Hayle, and what a turnout there was.

St Ives Brewery keg wall

Being British, we formed orderly queues in the new taproom, leading to a bar with 12 keg lines and two cask handpumps. Very community orientated, there were lots of families and a wide demographic in terms of age.

From the taproom, the huge, shiny brewery is clearly visible, assembled by Vigo, Stainless Steel Vessels, ABE Beverage Equipment, Alfa Laval, and Alan Ruddock Engineering.

It was good to meet head brewer, Callum White, recruited this year when the old brewhouse, in St Ives, was still operating. He was clearly delighted to have the new kit to brew on and grow the St Ives Brewery brand.

St Ives Brewery’s West Coast-inspired Back Road West

It was great to bump into former St Ives brewer, Mark Jasjew, too, as well St Austell Brewing team member and former Keltek head brewer Tom Bryant.

What owners Marco and Hayley each admitted to me was that they weren’t quite expecting so many people. Everyone was happy though, even to wait ten minutes or so for a beer, especially with regular appearances from the fabulous Dough Selecta guys bearing free pizza.

I had two beers — the West Coast IPA-inspired Back Road West (6.5% ABV) and fruity and malty Barnoon Dubbel (7% ABV). “Good choice,” said the barman, as I ordered the latter.

This looks like a very impressive addition to the Hayle drinking scene. And worth bearing in mind, if you’re wondering why St Ives Brewery is now outside its home town, that many locals refer to Hayle as St Ives East!
