The 3 Floyds Alpha King Challenge is returning to Europe. It will be hosted with Yakima Chief Hops at London’s Anspach & Hobday brewery in August.
The coveted Alpha King Crown
Brewer’s from all over Europe are being invited to participate in the quest to determine Europe’s best, most well-balanced and drinkable hop-forward beer. Judged on one day, cans and bottles of the fresh, bitter, hoppy beers will be blind tasted by a panel of international brewers and beer writers.
After initial rounds of judging, the public will be invited to The Arch House, Bermondsey, from 2pm on 11th August as the final round of judging begins. The winner will be announced at 4.20pm.
Alongside some serious kudos for having the best hoppy beer, the winners receive a cash prize, goody bags including hops from Yakima Chief, and their own Alpha King Crown.

Taylor Peterson, director of events at 3 Floyds, said: “We’re thrilled to bring the Alpha King Challenge back to the UK for its second year. A few members of our crew will be heading out to London to try all of the killer European entries, alongside our friends at Anspach & Hobday and Yakima Chief Hops.
“Since the very first Alpha King Challenge in 1999, it has always been a close race until the end, and we can’t wait to see which brew takes the top spot as the 25th winner.”
Luke Kulchstein, marketing lead, Europe, for Yakima Chief, said: “For over 20 years, the Alpha King Challenge has crowned the best hoppy beer in the US, as judged by the brewers themselves.
“Bringing the competition to Europe is testament to the quality of the beer being made across the continent and the dedication of the brewers behind them. This is our small way of acknowledging their accomplishments and giving the winner their crown, not to mention a years’ worth of bragging rights.”
Jack Hobday, co-founder of Anspach & Hobday, added: “We are just honoured to be hosting some seriously hoppy beers at our arch on the Bermondsey Beer Mile. American brewers 3Floyds are one of the godfathers of US craft beer and have been an inspiration to us right from the beginning. It is a privilege to be welcoming the best of Europe’s brewing to the world’s greatest hoppy beer competition.”
