Thanks to those who got in touch to tell me more about special beers being created to mark the Queen’s forthcoming Platinum Jubilee.
Dave Cornell’s Poppyland Brewery, in Cromer, has created Celebration 70 Ale, a 6% ABV amber beer. It has been rammed full of Fuggle hops, an English classic, and finished with Willamette, a Fuggle variety developed in the US Pacific North-West.
Dave says: “The result is a flavour-packed deep amber beer with everything from apricots, hawthorn hedges, mandarin oranges, and coconut on the nose and palate. A full, rich, smooth mouthfeel, and a pleasing, satisfying balance, where sweetness just edges out bitterness and keeps the drinker coming back.”
70 Celebration Ale will be on draught in the Red Lion, Cromer, for a limited period.
Wiltshire’s Arkell’s Brewery is releasing Platinum Jubilee Ale (4.2% ABV). It is described as a smooth, dark amber ale, which gives a sweet caramel undertone. A good dose of hops brings moreish fruity and citrus flavour on top.
Head brewer, Alex Arkell, said: “Keeping with our long tradition of celebrating royal milestones (we’ve done a few over the last 180 years!), this beer marks the truly extraordinary event of our Queen’s 70 years on the throne. She makes us proud to be a British brewer.”
