St Austell Brewery is looking for two brewing apprentices to join the team behind Tribute Pale Ale and Proper Job IPA.

St Austell brewing

Based in St Austell, the new positions are a dream job opportunity for beer-lovers to learn a highly sought-after craft from industry experts.

The successful applicants will get hands-on in the brewery and enrol on a two-year, Level 4 qualification, with academic-based training sessions held at Nottingham University. They will learn and develop the skills required to become an established and qualified brewer, covering all aspects of the brewing and packaging process.

Brewing is a varied job that involves much more than crafting the perfect beer. The apprentices will discover the ins and outs of everything from grain to glass. From sourcing raw materials and recipe design, to learning about brewing, fermenting, and packaging beers, coupled with all the necessary quality control in the brewery to the point of dispense across the bar.

Bath Ales, part of St Austell family group, launched the apprenticeship course in 2019, the first of its kind in the UK. The qualification is equivalent to the first year of a bachelor’s degree.

High-quality training opportunities

Rob Alder currently works in Bath Ales’ brewing team and is due to graduate next month. He said: “The support I received on the course was absolutely brilliant. There are packaging staff, brewing staff, and people who specialise in different roles.

“My apprenticeship has seen me touch on all of these specialisms, really rounding my knowledge and giving me a broad understanding of how the brewery runs so I can work in the laboratory one week, packaging the next, or the brewhouse.”

George Young, brewing director at St Austell Brewery and Bath Ales, said: “It’s important that we offer high-quality training opportunities and look to nurture the next generation of talent within the beer industry.

“The apprenticeships provide an opportunity to become a competent and established brewer in a world-class, multi-award-winning production team. We’re delighted to be able to offer this career pathway at St Austell Brewery.”
