A Wolverhampton brewery is raising a toast to 150 years of tradition with the launch of two new beers — and IPA and a mild — this week.

Springbanks Brewery launched the beers at the Wolverhampton Summer Festival of Beer and Cider, which started at the Newhampton Arts Centre yesterday. They have been inspired by a bid to promote the city’s rich brewing history.
“Wolverhampton has a long and storied brewing history that spans more than 150 years, and honouring this tradition is playing a huge part in the industry today,” said Pete Atwal, of Springbanks Brewery.
“Since opening earlier this year, all of us at Springbanks Brewery have been working tirelessly on launching our first beers, and we are excited to be able to finally be able to present them this week.”
He added: “Our Springbanks IPA is an all-English pale amber IPA, with a clean, crisp bitterness. It is rich in tangy marmalade and tropical stonefruit, and is rounded out by a smooth, earthy finish.
“We are also proud to launch our traditional mild pale ale; chestnut in colour, incredibly smooth and creamy, and lightly fruity with a malt-focused profile. It is beautifully balanced by earthy, woody, and gently floral English hops.
“Springbanks Brewery pays tribute to those brewers, draymen and staff who built Wolverhampton’s liquid legacy that we wish to follow. Our mission is to help preserve and promote brewing heritage for future generations to enjoy, and the launch of our first two beers is a major milestone as we strive to deliver on that promise.”
Springbanks Brewery was formed after the closure of Bank’s Park and Springfield breweries cast huge doubt on the future of Wolverhampton’s brewing culture. It is the proud custodian of one of only two Burton Union sets, an historic and cherished fermentation system dating back to the 19th century.
The brewery is working on its own recipes for a range of cask ales, craft beers, stouts, and lagers, as well as working with other breweries on new union beers.
Customers have had the first chance to taste the two new beers at the Wolverhampton Summer Festival of Beer and Cider at the Newhampton Arts Centre, which runs until tomorrow (25th July). The festival is sponsored by Springbanks Brewery.
