Licensees, communities, and drinkers have until noon on Thursday (6th November) to respond to the government’s consultation on licensing reform.

The government says it wants to tear up outdated licensing rules which, it says, have been holding back pubs, bars, and local event organisers.
For years, red tape has made it harder for pubs to serve food outside, host live music, or even stay open, with some historic venues forced to shut over noise complaints or outdated advertising rules.
“Licensing reform is not a silver bullet, but it is a real opportunity to deliver a system that works better for operators and communities alike,” said Kate Nicholls, chair of UKHospitality.
“If the sector does not speak up now, there is a risk that this chance for growth-led reform could be lost. The collective voice of hospitality will be crucial in ensuring these sensible and practical improvements are implemented.”

• Founder and former chief executive of Laine Pub Company, Gavin George, has joined Chickpea Group. Chickpea has 10 pubs in the South West of England.
“At a time when hundreds of country pubs are closing their doors throughout the nation, Chickpea is breathing life back into stunning rural assets and bringing warmth and colour to the communities they serve,” said Gavin. “It’s a great business and I’m thrilled to have been asked to join the board to support them in growing it.”
