Glasgow brewery Simple Things Fermentations has announced the release of its much-anticipated 2025 Belgian Christmas Ale, available from 27th October.

Now in its fifth year, this seasonal special is becoming an established winter tradition. It continues the tradition of using only malt, hops, yeast, and water, with a Belgian-style fermentation and natural carbonation.

With each annual release offering a new take on the style, this year’s version leans into the darker side of the season: almost stout-like in appearance, yet light and smooth on the palate.

Brewed with a rich malt bill featuring chocolate malt, Special B, and the brewery’s favourite, Maris Otter heritage malt, the 6.3% ABV beer also incorporates a restrained amount of Saaz hops to bring a subtle earthy, herbal lift.

It embraces both the festive light and the wintery dark, with the chocolate malt and a Belgian-style fermentation combining to bring notes of cherry liqueur chocolates and coffee. It’s almost black in colour but light on the palate, with a smooth, fruity finish.

“This beer has become something of a cult favourite,” said brewery owner Phil Sisson. “Each year we challenge ourselves to capture the spirit of the season in a slightly new way, while staying true to the principles that define the range. We’re really pleased with this year’s version — rich, warming, and deceptively drinkable.”

Previous editions have sold out in record time, and with demand growing year on year, the brewery has increased production for 2025 to ensure it reaches more customers and stockists across the UK.

The 2025 Belgian Christmas Ale will be available in 440ml cans, and on draught at selected independent retailers, bars, and bottle shops, from 27th October.
