The Glasladies Beer Society, a group for women and non-binary beer enthusiasts is marking Glasgow’s 850th anniversary with a historic tap takeover event.

Shilling Brewing Co is hosting a Glasgow 850 Series tap takeover to showcase collaboration beers made by:
- Dookit Brewing Co
- Simple Things Fermentations
- Mains Brewing
- Shilling Brewing Co
- Overtone Brewing and
- Mother Tongue Brewing
The breweries were asked to create a beer under the umbrella of ‘summer ale’. The results are a wide variety of brews, including a Kölsch, a Belgian summer ale, and a hazy saison.
The tap takeover will take place on Thursday (11th September) from 6pm. The free event is open to the general public and several of the brewers will be on hand to talk about their beers. There are special beer flights of the collab beers planned, together with beer and pizza deals, lucky dip prizes, and more.
Mother Tongue Brewing is a newly-launched microbrewery in Glasgow and this is their first release. “I’ve been part of the Glasladies Beer Society for years, and they’ve played a key role in my beer journey,” said founder and brewer, Eva Rainey.
“Through the group, I’ve had the chance to join in on brew days, try my hand at beer judging, and made some amazing connections and great friends along the way. As a woman — and proud Glaswegian — kicking off her own independent brewing project, I didn’t think twice about saying yes to this collaboration. This beer isn’t just a celebration of Glasgow’s past; it’s a toast to the women shaping its future.”
A unique feature of this collaboration series is that all the beers carry the same name. St Enoch: Mother Glasgow pays tribute to a woman who, in spite of being the figurative matriarch of the city and one of its patron saints, has been mostly ignored and forgotten by the public. The story of St Enoch is that of how one woman’s determination to survive, despite all odds, eventually led to Glasgow’s foundation. Part of the proceeds from the Glasgow 850 project will be donated to local charity Refuweegee.

The beers are available via a number of indie bottle shops, such as The Good Spirits Co, Wee Beer Shop, Bochka, Valhalla’s Goat, The Cave, Cork & Cask (Edinburgh), The Oban Beer Seller (Oban), and Beer Without Borders (Castle Douglas), as well as in various bars and pubs.
Sharlyn Ross, of Shilling Brewing Co, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be part of the collaborative brewing project with Glasladies Beer Society. As a microbrewery rooted in the heart of this vibrant city, we believe in celebrating the diversity and creativity that Glasgow is known for.
“Working with Glasladies, an incredible group dedicated to fostering inclusivity and innovation in the beer community, feels like the perfect way to mark this milestone. Expect something unique, representing the spirit of Glasgow — bold, diverse, and full of character.”
Nix Prabhu, the founder of Glasladies Beer Society, hopes that projects like this will get more folk, especially women and non-binary people, excited about the Glasgow indie beer scene.
She founded the group in 2019 with an aim to provide a safe and inclusive space in an otherwise male-dominated industry. The society is always open to new members and welcomes women and non-binary people to join them at their monthly meet-ups.
