Devon’s Salcombe Brewery Co have announced that both Island Street Porter and Pilsner have won silver at the World Beer Awards, in the taste category.

Salcombe awards

This follows hot on the heels of the brewery being awarded 2 stars for Seahorse and a 1 star for Devon Amber at the Great Taste Awards. In the past two years alone, Salcombe Brewery Co has received 30 different medals for its beers.

“We’re incredibly proud to have received these awards,” said head brewer Sam Beaman. “It’s a testament to the hard work and passion our team puts into every brew.

“These accolades motivate us to continue pushing the boundaries of craft beer while staying true to our roots here in Salcombe.”

Salcombe Seahorse (4.4% ABV) is an amber ale with a name reflecting the fact that the Salcombe Ria is a haven for both British species of seahorse. It is a sweet and smooth ale with a gentle hop character, hints of burnt caramel, and a smoked malty finish.

“Rich for the ABV, this beer does indeed offer up caramel, spice, citrus, and a hint of smoke,” the World Beer Awards judges noted. “Its sweetness and bitterness are well balanced.

“The beer slips down smoothly, too, as promised by the producer. Clean and dry on the finish, it inspires further sipping. It pairs beautifully with Cheddar, too.

“This is a very good bitter with a perfect marriage of hops and malt. The sweet caramel note is welcome and not cloying, making it thoroughly quaffable.”

Devon Amber (3.8% ABV) is a best bitter, easy drinking and malt-driven. “The beer has an attractive light copper hue,” said the judges. “On the nose, the beer gives a tempting mix of malty toast and sweet caramel, with brown bread notes. There is an undertone of classic fruitiness from British ale yeast.

“The flavour carries through nicely, with a mix of caramel and toasty malt, alongside fruity esters and a pleasant, lingering bitterness. It’s crisp and refreshing, and leaves you with a moreish malty and spicy impression on the palate. A really tasty, well-made bitter.”
