With New Zealand hop expert Dr Ron Beatson on holiday in the UK, Verdant Brewing Co took the opportunity to get him involved in a collaboration brew.

Verdant Tiny Science

Verdant works closely with NZ Hops, for whom Dr Beatson is a brand ambassador. Verdant was invited out to New Zealand earlier this year to take part in a panel discussion and visit hop farms. And it was during this trip that they met ‘Dr Ron’.

Ron has been utterly devoted to the hop breeding programme at Plant and Food Research and is responsible for varietals such as Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, Riwaka, Nectaron and Superdelic.

“This guy is a legend, and to have Ron and his family visit Verdant recently and collaborate on an amazing IPA that shouts out New Zealand was huge for us,” said the brewer.

The result of the collaboration is Tiny Science, a 6.5% ABV IPA. It is hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, Nectaron, and Superdelic.

“Expect huge and pungent flavours ranging from white wine and limes through to dank pineapples and odd yet comforting hedgerow herbs,” says the brewer.

NEWS IN BRIEF

The Swamp is DEYA’s new taproom, which will be opening at its Cheltenham home soon and which will be run in collaboration with bar experts Four Cats. To mark the partnership, a 4.2% ABV pale ale of the same name has been created. “Big lemon notes to taste, riding on passionfruit and candy, finishing with a low bitterness,” says the brewer. The beer is hopped with Galaxy, Citra, HBC1019, Strata, and BRU-1.

Siren Pachanga

Pachanga (5.5% ABV) is Siren Craft Brew’s new Mexican lager. “Our Mexican-style lager is classicly crisp and clean, but bursts into life with a generous squeeze of fresh lime juice and a metaphorical sprinkling of sea salt,” says the brewer. “It’s effervescent, super refreshing, and outstandingly drinkable.”
