St Austell Brewery, which has strong coastal connections, is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the RNLI with a limited edition pale ale.

The brewing and pub company will also host a special RNLI-themed dining event in September.

Summer Sun is a pale 4.5% ABV fruity summer blonde ale, with floral and citrus notes. The limited-edition cask beer, in pubs across the South West now, is part of a music-themed seasonal beer collection. It even has its own playlist, which beer lovers can listen to by scanning a QR code on the pumpclip.

Five pence from every pint of Summer Sun, inspired by the famous Texas song, will be donated to the RNLI.

In September, St Austell Brewery will also host RNLI Fish Supper events across 13 of its South West sea-side pubs, donating a percentage of ticket sales to the charity.

Beyond this, the company will help raise guest awareness on the RNLI’s latest water safety campaigns, providing crucial advice to help protect those visiting its pubs by the water’s edge.

“Many of our coastal pubs are near local lifeboat stations, and some of our team members are volunteer crew themselves,” said Laura McKay, marketing and communications director at St Austell Brewery.

“What better opportunity than the charity’s 200th anniversary for us to recognise the important role these volunteers play within our South West communities, keeping people safe on the water and saving lives at sea.”

Steve Instance, RNLI water safety lead for the South West, added: “This partnership will help the RNLI spread vital water safety messaging during our peak summer season, as well as bring in funds to help the charity in its mission to save lives at sea.

“St Austell pubs will help us reach a crucial demographic of holidaymakers visiting the coast this summer with our Float to Live messaging, which we know saves lives. If you find yourself in trouble in the water, fight the urge to panic, lay back with your ears submerged, and use your arms and legs to help you stay afloat. Then you can call for help or swim to safety.”

NEWS IN BRIEF
Northern Monk Noble Nectar

Northern Monk has collaborated with catering supplier The Sandwich King on Noble Nectar, a 4% ABV dry-hopped pilsner. With this brew, Northern Monk are trialling a new hop variety, Lorien. “You’ll get a touch of lemon, fresh florals, and melon on the nose,” says the brewer. “To the taste, it’ll be crisp with some bready malts, lemon and lime zest, melon, fresh hay, floral, a touch of spice, and some prominent bitterness to round it off.”

With rich unctous notes of Madeira and soft plums with a gentle bitterness, Barrel-Aged Barley Wine (9.5% ABV) is new from Docks Beers. “Brewed with the finest of British malt and hopped with British, noble, and American varieties, this unique beer has been gently aged in a single white wine barrel to perfection,” says the brewer. Also new from Docks Beers are Midnight Oil, a 6.5% ABV chocolate and vanilla stout, and Fruit Bomb, an imperial triple-fruited gose, coming in at 11% ABV.
