Adnams says sales of its Ghost Ship 0.5% ABV pale ale accelerated sharply in January, with 12-month volume and value growth of more than 30%.

Launched by Adnams in 2018, following a multi-million plant and de-alcoholiser investment at its brewery in Southwold, Ghost Ship 0.5% is now the UK’s number one low-/no-alcohol ale in the on-trade and has annual sales of £3.6m and 12,300 barrels (circa 20,100 hectolitres).

Ghost Ship 0.5%, a gold medal winner at the World Beer Awards, is currently the brewer’s second fastest-selling product and now accounts for more than a quarter of Ghost Ship’s total annual sales.

Last year, it launched a new slimline 300ml can, which has also been validated as gluten free. It is also available in bottle and keg.

Both 4.5% ABV and 0.5% ABV Ghost Ship are brewed with East Anglian pale ale, rye crystal, and cara malts, which add depth, and a blend of Citra and other American hops. A reverse osmosis plant is then used to de-alcoholise while retaining the distinctive Ghost Ship citrus taste. 

“Ghost Ship 0.5% is another example of Adnams successfully innovating the category, investing in its brand and introducing our range to a new and younger customer demographic,” said Adnams’ director of production, Fitzgerald.
