Innis & Gunn has released 12 Moons Lager, bottled in August 2022 under a full moon and then aged for 12 months — 12 moons — in 75cl bottles.
The 5.8% lager is bottle-conditioned and unpasteurised, inspired by the ultimate timekeeper, the moon. Its extended maturation goes well beyond the norm and results in a sublimely smooth and refreshing beer with a rewarding complexity. It should always be served ice cold, says the brewery.
“We started in 2003 with the launch of Innis & Gunn The Original, a beer unlike anything that had come before it, made incredibly special by its lengthy maturation in single malt whisky casks,” said Dougal Gunn Sharp, founder and master brewer at Innis & Gunn. “Ever since, we have been fascinated by the effect time can have upon beer.
“Then, in 2012, we saw an opportunity to launch a great premium Scottish lager so as to shake-up a marketplace dominated with imported brews. Since then, our 4.6% Lager Beer has become Scotland’s number one craft lager and has recently won gold at the prestigious Monde Selection Awards.
“Since we like pushing the boundaries of brewing, it seemed fitting to create a long-matured lager in honour of the moon. We have brewed 12 Moons Lager with both lager and ale malts, and with naked oats for texture. And like most Innis & Gunn beers, we have brewed with Super Styrian hops with their special floral aromas of lemongrass and spice.”
