Greene King Brewery is launching Mischief Maker, its latest limited-edition cask ale for August and September, as part of its Fresh Cask Releases calendar.
The 6% ABV golden beer is a double-dryhopped IPA that uses British hops to deliver a complex mix of fruit aromas and flavours.
The name is inspired by the renowned herbalist and astrologer, Nicholas Culpeper. He brought medicine to the masses and attempted to make medical treatments more accessible in the 1600s.
One of his well-known quotes mentions beating roots and herbs and adding them into an ale or beer. This, drunk daily, could allegedly clear, strengthen, and quicken poor eyesight — not something that would be advised these days. With another meaning for Culpeper being Mischief Maker, the beer’s name was an obvious choice.
The hops used in Mischief Maker have all been supplied by Charles Faram, the UK based grower-owned hop merchant. It operates a Hop Development Programme, which aims to find agronomically sound and exciting new hop varieties in the UK. Mischief Maker is all about experimenting with the natural ingredients of hops to create a unique and tasty beer.
“Mischief Maker is another one of our brand new launches to the Fresh Cask Releases calendar this year, bringing something exciting and different for customers to try when it comes to cask styles,” said Jack Palmer, head brewer at Greene King.
“The story behind this ale adds another unique element, shining a light on a part of British history, and makes for a great conversation over a pint at the pub. With the interesting mix of fruit flavours and experimentation with hops, this is the one to have on the bar for the summer months.”
