A date has been set for a public consultation on the future of the Iron Duke, in Great Yarmouth, the subject of a long-running campaign to save it as a pub.
Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust has set aside three hours on Thursday, 29th June, from 3.30pm until 6.30pm.
As stalwart campaigner Caroline Jones points out, this is a working day, when many interested parties might not be able to attend. “It is appalling,” she says on social media.
For those who can’t make the meeting, there is an online survey which can be completed to make a representation.
“The online survey is very limited, but there is a box for comments, so please make the most of it,” says Caroline. “Thank you everyone who has supported our campaign — it has saved the Iron Duke from demolition.”
While it’s still standing, though, there is currently a plan in place to see it converted to a burger bar when it is one of the finest examples of an Art Deco pub out there. The campaign to save it as a pub has garnered huge support, not least from veteran beer writer and campaigner Roger Protz.
“We want everyone to have their say, so please take part and spread the word,” says Caroline. “This is a British pub, not an American burger bar. A rare survivor of stunning interwar design.”
