Northern Monk has teamed up with Rwanda’s first craft brewery on three beers under its Old Flax Store (OFS) project umbrella.

Northern Monk Rwanda

“Rwanda is known as the land of a thousand hills,” says Northern Monk. “We’re not exactly sure how many hills are in Yorkshire, but we think it’s something we have in common.”

Kweza Brewing is women-owned and women-led. Kweza means ‘harvest’ and ‘purity’, echoing their mission to celebrate Rwanda’s flora and ingredients through beer.

Some of the profits from these OFS project beers will be donated to Kweza to support its ongoing campaign to grow its business and promote Rwandan brewing.

The beers, with brewer’s notes

OFS079 — Banana Raspberry Jasmine Fruited Ale
A banana and jasmine fruited ale, coming in at 5.5% ABV. A sumptuous sessionable beer.

OFS080 — Coffee Milk Stout
A take on a classic coffee milk stout, using traditional Rwandan cyato coffee beans, giving a smooth 5.3% ABV stout.

OFS081 — Sorghum IPA
A twist on a juicy IPA, sorghum is a type of cereal grain used regularly in Rwandan beers, and this one is bursting with a fruit-load of juicy hops, at a mouth-watering 6% ABV.
