The Glasladies Beer Society is to become the first female/non-binary organisation to host a beer festival in Glasgow.
Originally from Toronto, Nix Prabhu founded the Glasladies Beer Society in 2019, with an aim to provide a safe and inclusive space for women and non-binary people to meet like-minded folk, enjoy good beer, and learn more about the industry.
“Having worked in the beer industry in Toronto, Glasgow, and Newcastle, I saw first-hand that beer was still perceived as a predominantly male drink, and this acts as a barrier for women and non-binary people to explore the space and learn about beer,” said Nix. “I wanted to do my part to change this rhetoric.”
The Collaboration Series Festival will be held on 7th May from 5pm to 10pm at Glasgow Beer Works Beer Garden. It is the culmination of a six-month collaboration series with local businesses Boden Brewing, Dookit Brewing Co, Drygate Brewing Co, Glasgow Beer Works, Hidden Lane Organic Brewery, and Simple Things Fermentations.
The collaboration beer styles range from an alcohol-free sour to an 8.9% ABV Belgian quad, and a saison to a stout, ensuring something for every palate.
The Glasladies get together for a beer
The venue is fully accessible and the festival is family friendly and dog friendly. General admission tickets are £6, with £1 from every sale going to local charity Ubuntu Women Shelter.
Festival-goers can also buy VIP tickets for £13, which give attendees access to one of the exclusive tasting sessions led by the brewers. This is a rare opportunity to learn about the beers directly from those who made them. The VIP tickets also allow early access into the festival at 4pm.
Rachel Suttle, owner of Hidden Lane Organic Brewery, said working with the Glasladies Beer Society has been such a refreshing experience in what is still a very male-dominated industry. “The open-mindedness and forward thinking of the group has led to some amazingcollaborations, and Hidden Lane‘s Peach and Raspberry Saison, brewed by group members, is in my opinion one of the best.
“Their work and dedication will bring an additional point of interest for the beer festival, particularly helping sustain people’s interest in craft beer and further develop inclusivity and gender equality in the industry.”
Sponsorship and food vendor opportunities for the festival are currently available. For more information contact glasladiesbeersociety@gmail.com.
