Cornwall brewers have picked up a number of honours at the SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) regional bottle and can beer awards.
Gold winner: Alfie’s Revenge, from Driftwood Spars Brewery, St Agnes
There was a gold for Theo Corfield’s Castle Brewery, in Lostwithiel, for Golden Gauntlet (4% ABV). Theo also picked up a silver for his Restormel Gold (4.1% ABV) and a bronze for Cornish Stuggy Stout (4.6% ABV).
Up on the North Coast, Padstow Brewing Co picked up gold medals for Padstow Pilsner (4.4% ABV) and Sundowner 6.0 (6.8% ABV). Lobster Tale (4.5% ABV) grabbed a silver.
Driftwood Spars Brewery’s Alfie’s Revenge, a strong red beer coming in at 6.5% ABV, won gold in the strong beer category. All of the gold regional winners will go forward to national finals of the competition at SIBA’s BeerX conference in March 2022.
Brewery owner, Louise Treseder, said: “Alfie’s was a pet project of our founding brewer, Pete Martin. Of all the unique beers he made, he was most proud of Alfie’s, which won Champion Winter Beer of Britain in 2012.
“It’s wonderful to see it still winning awards today, and I’m grateful to Pete’s successor Mike for staying faithful to the original recipe and continuing to brew this beer with so much care and attention.”
Alfie’s Revenge has been selected to be served at the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group’s Christmas Party, hosted by the British Beer & Pub Association in Westminster.
