Distiller Bruichladdich has joined forces with BrewGooder and Vault City Brewery to create a sustainable beer for St Andrew’s Day.

Brewgooder whisky sour

The first-time collaboration will see 3 million litres of clean water provided to communities around the world. It is born out of shared values and a progressive mindset — as well as love for the whisky sour cocktail and beer!

The beer was brewed in Portobello, Edinburgh, using a mixed fermentation base sour. It was barrel aged in
Bruichladdich casks for nine months to infuse it with the iconic character of the distiller’s unpeated Islay single malt.

The depth of flavour from the casks provides delicate notes of sweet oak and barley, while the addition of hand-picked lemon balm, foraged locally from Islay, and Scottish heather honey create a balance of tart acidity and smoky sweetness.

Every litre of beer sold will fund 1,000 litres of clean water to communities around the world, through Brewgooder’s Billion Pint Pledge. This aims to produce 1bn pints of clean water in the next three years.

The initiative in partnership with charity: water — an organisation committed to solving the global water crisis in our lifetime. It is set to support projects in 22 countries, where reliable nationwide access to clean water continues to be a challenge.

Worldwide impact

Alan Mahon, founder of Brewgooder, said: “This is the beer we are most proud of. Not only is it an innovative and delicious product, it is a true demonstration of what is possible when three Scottish brands come together to deliver a world class beer with a worldwide impact.”

Richard Wardrop, head of marketing at Vault City, added: “We feel this is the most interesting and rewarding beer to come out of Scotland for a long, long time, and hope that it will be enjoyed by many.”

Douglas Taylor, chief executive of the Bruichladdich Distillery Company, said: “When the team at Vault City and Brewgooder came to us with the idea of this sour beer, we were immediately taken with the concept. As our first partnership with a brewery and a fellow B Corp, this is a unique collaboration between progressive Scottish brands who believe their impact can go beyond simply making flavourful drinks.”

The 375ml bottle is specially designed to represent Brewgooder’s waves of positivity and Vault City’s drop pattern, each tied with Bruichladdich’s iconic Classic Laddie aqua colour across one label, epitomising the harmony in the collaboration and liquid inside.

The product will be released for general sale and available until sold out at vaultcity.com from 5pm today (30th November), before rolling out to export markets.
