British hop growers are reducing planting amid concerns over slow contracting and over-production, according to a new report from hop merchant Charles Faram.

The news comes as the company’s group technical director, Will Rogers, reports on mid-season progress in hop fields around the world.

In a report reproduced on Beer Today, Will says that the British hop yield could be reduced by up to 40%.

He said: “It’s incredibly important that we continue to support British growers, and we are encouraging brewers to buy British hops or risk losing our hop industry completely.

“Reduced food miles and supporting local industry should be important to all, and if it’s part of your brewery’s values we should be shouting about it!”
