Sharp’s Brewery has announced that its unique musical collaboration with Mercury Music Prize nominee Nick Mulvey has reached one million streams, raising more than 4,000 for Surfers Against Sewage (SAS).
Proceeds from the track go to the Cornwall-based charity to help protect British coastlines from pollution, including plastic waste.
In October 2019, Sharp’s and Nick Mulvey announced this first-of-its-kind collaboration with the launch of the track In the Anthropocene. A total of 105 limited edition playable vinyl records were made entirely from plastic washed up on Cornish beaches, and sold out almost immediately, raising more money for ocean protection. The track was released on Spotify and Apple Music, with digital stream proceeds continuing to raise funds for the SAS.
Sharp’s commitment to the Cornish coast has already seen the brewery providing vital funding (more than £42,000) for the Blue Flag and Seaside Award applications in Cornwall over the past five years.
In 2018, Sharp’s collaborated on its first Keynvor project with Universal Music, using sounds recorded from the Cornish oceans transformed into music. Last year, the company launched a £1 million charitable advertising campaign, via Good Loop, which will see £25,000 go back to the SAS.
James Nicholls, marketing controller at Sharp’s Brewery, said: “Cornish culture is built around the ocean, whether that’s seafood, surfing, or our own Atlantic Ale. We’re thrilled about reaching one million streams with our Keynvor track and are extending our support for SAS by being a lead sponsor of their Big Spring Beach Clean in April 2020 — another fantastic Cornish initiative.”
Nick Mulvey added: “I’ve always loved the wildness of the Cornish coast, and it feeds something deep in me every time I’m there. My music is about knowing who — or what — we are, right at the core. I’m stoked about the fact that we’ve reached one million streams already, and there is no doubt that the number will keep increasing as time passes by. Thank you to Sharp’s Brewery for supporting this project.”
