Sharp’s Brewery sponsored the Runway Runaround at RAF St Mawgan at the weekend, even entering its own team.

The two runs (both a 5k and a 10k) took participants around the historic runway, giving a unique behind-the-scenes experience of the airbase, past vintage aircraft hangars, watch towers and historic bomb stores.

The epic event acted as a celebration of the RAF’s 100th anniversary, RAF St Mawgan’s 75th anniversary, but most importantly, as a bid to raise vital funds needed to help Cornwall Air Ambulance save more lives through its New Heli Appeal.

As a major appeal partner, Sharp’s has donated £10,000 to the appeal, which seeks to bring a next-generation air ambulance helicopter to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by April 2020.

Providing beer for fundraising events

The Rock-based brewery has supported the lifesaving charity for more than six years, providing beer for fundraising events and taking on sponsored challenges. In 2014, the company raised more than £12,800 from donating 5p from every pint it sold.

Sharp’s supported the Runway Runaround by providing beer for the goody bags that runners received on completion, as well as prizes for participants.

James Nicholls, senior brand manager at Sharp’s Brewery, said: “We are extremely proud to be the first major appeal partner for the Cornwall Air Ambulance’s New Heli Appeal.

“Cornwall Air Ambulance is so vital to the Cornish resident community and visitors alike, and we are delighted to be part of the appeal to raise £2.5m to save even more lives.”
