Grasmere beer at The Good Sport pub

Cumbria’s Grasmere Brewery has announced the launch of a new range of beers which will be available in hotels and restaurants across the Lake District.

The brewery, run by Beth and Paul Abbott, began life just seven months ago, producing unique craft beer for its taproom, which is also owned by the couple, The Good Sport pub.

Grasmere Blonde Cumbrian LagerThe unique range of lager, bitter and ale has proven a hit with both tourists and locals, and is now featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. This success has led self-taught brewer Paul to explore bottling for the first time.

He said: “When we first took over the pub in Grasmere, there was a definite gap in the market for good, locally brewed beer. We wanted to provide our neighbours and visitors with a unique product, brewed right on their doorstep, and we’re immensely proud that we managed to achieve this at The Good Sport.

“After the great feedback we’ve had at the pub and the recognition from CAMRA, it felt like the right time to move on to the next chapter for the brewery, and we’ve already started distributing our bottles.”

The Grasmere beer — Pale Ale, Blonde Lager and Red Bank Bitter — is bottled at the brewery, located at Beth and Paul’s B and B in the village, Lake View Country House.

The range comprises a clean and refreshing lager with hints of lemon and lime, a dry, citrusy pale ale, which is unfiltered for maximum flavour, and a rich, full-bodied bitter, infused with crystal hops.

The bottles will be distributed via Cumbria’s largest wine and drinks merchant, Grapevine Wine Services, and will be available across the Lake District in the region’s leading bars, restaurants and hotels, as well as Grasmere’s Post Office. They will also be available to buy in The Good Sport pub in the next few months.

‘Unique identity’

Paul said: “We wanted to keep our unique identity through using diverse flavours, yet make our beers accessible and extremely drinkable. We hope the flavour profiles, like our branding, help us to stand out from the crowd and intrigue our customers.

“Working with a leading distributor like Grapevine gives our relatively small brewery the logistics of a much larger company – it’s a great way to get our name and products out there. We’re so excited for our bottles to gain traction across the Lake District and help put Grasmere crafted beer on the map!”

As well as its successful range of beer, Grasmere Brewery’s head brewer, Paul, is now working on a new scrumpy, which will be available on tap at The Good Sport in the coming months.

Lake View Country House also offers bespoke brewery masterclass weekends, where guests can learn first-hand about the brewing process, brew their own Grasmere beer, and experience a beer-pairing menu at The Good Sport.
