Goose Island’s search for its first UK brewmaster is over, with Andrew Walton taking up the position when the Chicago company’s new brewpub opens in Shoreditch, London, later this year.

Siebel Institute certified, and chosen for his enthusiasm and keen experience with craft beer, Andrew joins the Goose Island brewing team with three years of professional brewing under his belt, most recently with London’s Fourpure Brewing Co.

Following his month-long immersion at Goose Island in Chicago, Andrew will be responsible for the operation of the London brewery and the development of unique recipes for beers made on site.

As brewmaster, he will also be the first in Europe to manage the Rack AeriAle kit, an innovative nitrogen draft-dispensing system that connects barrel-aged beers directly to the pub’s tap system without the risk of oxidisation. Other tools at his disposal include a draught infusion tower and a small barrel ageing area, allowing him to push flavour boundaries and discover new pairings exclusive to the Shoreditch brewpub.

The brewpub, scheduled to open on Shoreditch High Street in September, will have plenty on offer for guests, touting an unrivalled beer selection, ranging from in-house brews, beers from the brewery’s classic and award-winning range, a Chicago-inspired pizza menu highlighting local producers, and music championing both indie and headliner live acoustic and DJ acts.

Customers will also be able to observe the brewery up close, in action, as beer is made and learn more about the brewing process with Andrew himself.

Ken Stout, president of Goose Island Beer Co International, said: “London has always held a special place in Goose Island’s history. Our next chapter in Shoreditch represents a work of love and dedication that has been 30 years in the making, and we’re excited to have the brewpub in Andrew’s capable hands.

“As we continue to contribute to, and learn from, British beer culture, we are excited to be creating a new experience in the heart of East London, where foodies, beer drinkers and music lovers alike can join together in appreciation of a good time — and great beer.”

Andrew added: “I am thrilled to be joining Goose Island at such an exciting time. I’ve had an incredibly warm welcome in Chicago and as I continue to learn about the Goose Island family, I’m eager to do them proud as brewmaster in our new Shoreditch location. It’ll certainly be an adventure, and one I can’t wait to get cracking on.”
