Yorkshire-based craft brewery, Brew York, has teamed up with boutique gin and whisky distillery, Cooper King, to create a botanical pale ale, in celebration of its second year in business.
Launching at Brew York’s second birthday event at its tap room tomorrow and Saturday (April 13 and 14), the gin-inspired pale ale, Sweet Gin Music, has been produced using juniper, coriander, angelica, lemon peel and orris root. Hops and yeast have been specially selected to bring a herbal pepperiness to the beer.
Located inside York’s city walls, with beer sold throughout the UK, Brew York was founded by Lee Grabham and Wayne Smith in 2016.
The idea for the partnership came about not long after Lee was introduced to Cooper King Distillery by a family member. Lee went on to join the Cooper King Founders’ Club, and from then on the two businesses have kept in regular contact. It was decided that a gin-inspired beer was a fantastic way to strengthen the relationship between the two ventures, and to push both drinks categories into new territory.
Established by co-founders Chris Jaume and Dr Abbie Neilson, Cooper King Distillery is England’s smallest distillery, based in Sutton-on-the-Forest in North Yorkshire, on the site of a former stable.
Entertainment
The partnership will see Cooper King Distillery attend Brew York’s birthday bash, alongside other local brewers including Electric Bear Brewing Co and Magic Rock Brewing.
Entertainment at Brew York’s birthday event will include live music from Matt Oxberry, Taz Barnes, Holly Bilton, Mikkelson Music, and The Entertainment Company, prize give-aways and food from local street vendors, including Street Cleaver, The Ball Box and Once Across the Garden.
Chris Jaume said: “We are incredibly excited to work alongside one of Yorkshire’s most loved craft brewers. It’s a very exciting time for craft brewing in Britain and we’re delighted to be able partner with fellow brewing enthusiasts with a passion for the Yorkshire region. We hope both fans of Cooper King Distillery and Brew York will enjoy this new creation.”
Lee Grabham added: “I love what Abbie and Chris are doing with Cooper King and can’t wait to sample their gin and whisky, which will both be stocked in the Brew York Tap Room once released. With the idea of a Botanical Pale Ale, who better work alongside than your local expert distillers, and I really like that this beer pushes the boundaries of what both beer and gin can be!”
