The Speedwell Bar, AKA Mennie’s, has been named pub of the year by the Tayside branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
Tayside CAMRA chairman, Alex Faulds, said: “Jonathan Stewart and his team keep all ales in great condition and strive to bring the best ales from around the UK, with a strong focus on local ales. Jonathan junior has the passion for real ale, just like his dad, Jonathan Stewart senior.”
Built in 1903 for James Speed but known as Mennie’s, after the family who ran it for more than 50 years, the pub has a beautiful L-shaped bar that is divided by a part-glazed screen and a magnificent mahogany gantry and counter, with dado panelled walls and a Jacobean ceiling. There are two sitting rooms, separated by a glass screen.
It is one of the finest examples of an Edwardian pub interior in the country and is featured in CAMRA’s Scotland’s True Heritage Pubs.
Runner-up pub of the year was the Cherrybank Inn, Perth.
