Beer Today celebrates its 20th anniversary in October 2024. Over those years the beer landscape has changed a lot. Brewers, beer, and venues have come and gone.
I describe Beer Today often as a hobby which got out of hand. It started in 2004 when I was full-time employed at a regional newspaper group as a sub-editor. Gradually it has built into the massive site it is today.
The premise is very simple. Online, daily news updates, seven days a week. Plus a beer and pub guide, currently under construction, and a huge links directory (for which listings are free). Unique daily users number around 10,000.
In recent years, I’ve coupled running the site with running a community magazine in nearby St Ives, but also working on the bar at The Star Inn, Crowlas, brewpub of the multi-award-winning Penzance Brewing Co.
The pub was owned by my mate and brewing legend Pete Elvin. “Let me know if you ever get stuck for staff,” I told him ages ago. In 2017, I started on the bar and gradually learnt the ropes of what goes on to keep a pub running. Alas, Pete developed bowel cancer and died on Christmas Eve last year. The pub is now closed, but opening again soon. I doubt I’ll be back behind the bar, though — that’s a young person’s game.
So Beer Today needs to have some income to keep going. I could cover the site in advertising, but no-one wants that, so I’m hoping you can support my Patreon scheme.
