St Ives Brewery

Alba (5.2% ABV, bottle)
Crystal clear, golden, with a white head that stays well, this has an aroma of resinous, piney hops, and a hint of orange. On the palate, it’s well balanced with a background of grainy malt. There’s decent, but not strident bitterness, with notes of lemon, lime and papaya coming through. This should sell well. Hat tip, too, to the label designer. There’s even a QR code to get the story behind Alba, a ship wrecked off Porthmeor beach, St Ives.

Back Road East (5.8% ABV, can)
Hazy amber, with a white head that stays well, this has a very tropical aroma, passionfruit and lime, with some dankness and resinousness. The palate is, at once, dank and juicy. Simcoe and Mosaic are the hops, but the Simcoe is in control. I’d like a hint more fruitiness, but it’s a good brew.

Barnoon (7% ABV, can)
A gorgeous copper colour, clean and polished, with a thick white head, this has a deep, malty aroma with a hint of berry fruit and caramel. On the palate, it’s a very full experience, lovely body, with bready malt, toffee notes, then blackberry, adding a hint of juicy sharpness. There’s also a Belgian warmth, comforting one. A very well put together beer which would be an autumnal treat — but just as good in spring, when I’m drinking it!

Dawn NEIPA (6.1% ABV)
Hazy gold with a voluminousand long-lasting white head, this has a pleasing, piney, tropical aroma. Very smooth, with a lovely body. Big juicy tropical fruit flavours, with fresh pine, and some light biscuit malt binding it all together. With a good bitter finish, this is a lovely drop.

Daydream IPA (5,4% ABV, can)
Hazy gold with a very keen white head, this has a big tropical fruit aroma which burst from the can as soon as it is opened. Hints of spice there, too. On the palate, it’s bold, dank, and juicy, with flavours of peach, mango, and lychee set against biscuit malt. There’s astacks of bitterness that builds to the finish. Good body and a nice smoothness.

IPA (5% ABV, bottle)
A bright, deep golden, with a white head that stays well, this has an aroma of resinous hops, spiciness, lemon zest, and hints of grapefruit. It’s tasting great — resinous, spicy hops, with an edge of lemon and some orange coming through. Decent bitterness of the finish which will keave you wanting anoteher. Dangerously sessionable at 5%!

Las Brisas (6.3% ABV, draught)
Deep amber with a foaming white head this is an espresso West Coast IPA created in collaboration with Yallah Coffee. Coffee IPA? Sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it does! It’s all about subtlety and the coffee notes work well with the orange citrus flavours from the hops. I went back for more!

Meor (4.8% ABV, bottle)
Clear golden with a white head, the aroma is punchy citrus and grassy, with some spice. It’s a good session-style IPA. There are nice lemon citrus notes, some tropical fruit bringing up the rear, with some spice, light malt, and good bitterness.
