Barrel Aged Dark Star (13.1% ABV, bottle)
What an exceptional beer this is, gifted by my friend Lotte Peplow, European ambassador for the Brewers Association. It’s a blend of vintages of the base beer in seven- to 12-year-old bourbon barrels. Jet black, it has a dark tan head. The aroma is rich, deep, roast malt, molasses, and the bourbon from the barrels. Beautifully enticing. On the palate it’s smooth as silk, lovely body. There’s bitter dark chocolate, the warmth of bourbon, and notes of vanilla and wood. Stupidly easy drinking. A beer that hugs you when people aren’t allowed to.
