Extra Black (4.5% ABV, can)
Pours black and has a tight, creamy head, and a roasty aroma with notes of espresso. In fact, you get a burst of the aroma as soon as the can pops open, and that head stays really well. It’s rich and slightly chocolately, and I get the vaguest hint of smoke. It’s smooth and rich with a gentle bitterness on the finish. A good entry into that ‘not Guinness’ sector!

Leith Juice (4.7% ABV)
This hazy gold, with a full white head, this offers a big hit of tropical fruit on the nose. It’s a clean, modern session IPA, with pineapple dominating among the tropical fruit notes. Nicely made and very quaffable, with a full, smooth body. I’m guessing there are oats among the malts.

Leith Pils (4.8% ABV, can)
Bright gold with a white head, this has an aroma of bready malt which carries through to the palate where it is accompanied by light lemon citrus and herbal notes, along with a hint of spice. Light, easy drinking, and very refreshing.

Mango Mimosa (4.7% ABV, can)
A golden Berliner weisse. The head disappears almost immediately. Aroma: mango. Taste: mango. It’s very fruity, and quite sharp. Well made, I’m sure, but not for me.

Old Fashioned Wee Heavy (8% ABV, bottle)
One to sip, this. A really beautiful dark deep red, mahogany even, with a tight, light tan head that stays very well. There are aromas of whisky even as I pour the beer from the bottle. On the nose, in the glass, the whisky is less apparent, but bitters, which is in the recipe, comes through. Bitters on the palate, too, with orange peel, then a whisky note creeping in and building to a bittersweet finish. That’s a clever way of presenting cocktail flavour in a beer. It’s rich, complex, and very satisfying.

Salted Speyside Wee Heavy (8% ABV, bottle)
The aroma: whisky, wood and rich fruit. This is one of those beers — red with a good cream coloured head — that you want to keep sniffing for ages before you get stuck in. And when you do venture for a taste it’s a sipper, for sure. Rich and smooth, there’s bready malt, rich toffee, notes of toffee apple, berries,and that warming bit of whisky. Delightful!

South Island (4.5% ABV, can, collaboration with Attic Brew Co)
A very fresh, tropical, citrus aroma burst forth as the can is opened. A hazy, sandy colour, with not much in the way of a head, this is a delightful session beer. It’s light and refreshing, really showcasing those New Zealand white wine hop flavours, with an edge of citrus and passionfruit.
