Process combustion burner specialist Lanemark Combustion Engineering  is raising a glass to one of its microbrewery customers, happy to have made a contribution towards a national accolade.

Goat’s Milk ale, from Church End Brewery, in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, was named champion beer of Britain for 2017 by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) at the Great British Beer Festival.

“This is a highly regarded achievement in the brewing industry and we are delighted for brewery manager, Karl Graves, and his team at Church End Brewery,” said Adrian Langford, general manager at Lanemark Combustion Engineering, also based in Nuneaton.

“It clearly represents the coming together of a long list of production methods and well-established brewing skills, and by ensuring the company can achieve the optimum process heating — a key factor in maintaining high quality and consistent brewing operations — we hope we have been able to make a useful contribution.”

Church End Brewery uses a Lanemark TX25E burner system to heat the hot liquor tank to between 63°C and 68°C for the preparation of the mash tun. Once transformed into wort, a volume equivalent to 20 barrels is then transferred into an adjacent copper where a second Lanemark TX30 burner system operates into a three-inch helical coil heat exchanger.

Environmental benefits

Adrian said: “This minimises intrusion into the working area and enables the TX30 burner system to heat the wort to 100°C, where it is then held at a rolling boil for approximately 90 minutes.” Overall, the installation achieves efficiency of typically 82% — some 20% higher than Church End Brewery’s original steam heating system — while significant environmental benefits have also been achieved.

Karl Graves said: “We are extremely proud of the supreme champion beer of Britain achievement and it pays
testimony both to our brewing team and to our selection of the most appropriate production equipment.

“The Lanemark equipment is now well established as a key element of our production process and we have noted a reduction in gas consumption per 12-month period of some 42% since the installation, while helping us
to double our barrel capacity per brew.”

Paul Hamblett, Church End’s sales manager, added: “All of our beers now benefit from the Lanemark facility and that includes, of course, Goat’s Milk. It has progressed from a beer brewed and named specifically for a brewing festival to become our biggest selling product and, of course, we are grateful for the support of all our installation suppliers, not least Lanemark Combustion Engineering.”
