Hops — a fine bone china mug featuring a screenprint of British hops and the Latin words for the plant, Humulus Lupulus — is the first in a series of limited edition mugs being created by new business Mugly.

The business is the brainchild of public relations specialist Helen Campbell, who has worked with brands including Tiny Rebel Brewery.

She said: “Mugly is a really special mug company that works with talented artists to create limited edition, collectable mugs, in fine bone china or enamel, featuring designs that mean something and represent a passion.

“Our first mug has been specially designed with beer lovers and brewers in mind. The mug features hops and the Latin word for hops, and it’s a generous size, too (365ml), as many of us enjoy a decent large coffee first thing in the morning.

“Our second and third mugs feature a tattoo-style seahorse (on fine bone china) and an enamel mug for book-lovers celebrating the book town of Hay-on-Wye.”

Helen added: “The artists I’m working with are wonderful creative people and currently they are all based in Wales — my identity is important to me and Wales is so rich with artistic talent.

“The ultimate goal is to have a shop full of limited edition, collectable mugs and a place where people can come in and sit down for a chat, too. I’ve wanted to have a tea shop since I was about seven years old so this idea hasn’t come out of nowhere, it’s actually the culmination of several decades of moving around different cities and supporting different types of businesses, learning a lot and finding inspiration.

“Currently we are selling online and through other people’s shops, such as Beer Revolution in Hay-on-Wye, which is exciting in itself. The bricks and mortar shop for Mugly will happen a few years in the future I think.”

Mugly will be at Glanusk Estate Fayre and NGS Open Gardens on May 20, selling the first mug, Hops, which features botanical art by Lizzie Harper and typography by Jessica Watkins.

The Hay-on-Wye mugs will be sold through Addymans Books, in Hay, as well as online at mugly.love, and will also be sold at Glanusk, alongside the stunning Seahorse mugs.

There’s a chance to win one of the lovely Hops mugs with Beer Today. Simply sign up for our newsletter (in the sidebar on this page or any other news page) and you will be entered into a draw at the end of April. One lucky winner will receive one of the limited edition mugs!
