Bristol Cider Shop has been named the UK’s Independent Cider Retailer of the Year and now it’s using that platform to educate drinkers about real cider.
The team have written a Cider Tasting Guide, which is available to download for free here — it’s an introduction to traditional craft cider and explains some of the different varieties produced in the South West. It features ten ciders, each illustrating a different style or production method.
There is a description of how ‘proper’ cider is made from 100% fresh pressed juice. This is in stark contrast to commercial ciders, which can contain as little as 35% juice, often concentrated with added flavourings.
The guide is based on the shop’s popular Introduction to Cider tastings, which are held every Friday night. No prior knowledge is assumed and the guide is intended to be both informative and entertaining.
The ciders have been selected from some of the owners’ favourite producers, all of whom are local, independent and award-winning. All of the ciders are 100% vegetarian / vegan friendly and gluten free. They are also available to buy in a Cider Tasting Kit, which contains a copy of the guide, a tasting glass and a miniature of Somerset Cider Brandy.
