Dartmoor Brewery

Dartmoor Brewery

Dartmoor Brewery created its first pint of Jail Ale in 1994 and since then the business has grown in leaps and bounds. Jail Ale has proved to be hugely successful across the West Country, and has since been joined by Legend, Dartmoor IPA and Dartmoor Best in the core range, and now the brewery is looking to increase sales further afield.

The brewery started out in the back of the Prince of Wales pub in Princetown and moved to a purpose-built new brewery on land at the old Princetown railway yard in 2005. That building was extended in 2017 as the company looked to growth under new managing director, Richard Smith.

Ian Cobham joined as head brewer in 2016, with former head brewer, Mike Lunney, staying on as consultant brewer.

Core beers

Dartmoor Best (3.7% ABV)
A hand-crafted amber ale, made using Dartmoor water, Dartmoor-grown malted barley, the brewer’s core range of English hop varieties and an excellent new hop variety, giving a very drinkable, dry hop, citrus fruit character.

Dartmoor Jail AleDartmoor IPA (4% ABV)
A highly drinkable, light golden coloured beer with a unique blend of English hops that combine to create a superb spicy apple and citrus fruit flavour, finished off with a crisp, refreshing aftertaste and subtle hop aroma. Created alongside Jail Ale in 1994, this beer is known locally as Inmates’ Pale Ale!

Jail Ale (4.8% ABV)
A multi-award-winning, full-bodied, deep golden brown beer, Jail Ale has a well-rounded flavour and a rich, moreish aftertaste.

Legend (4.4% ABV)
A classic cask-conditioned beer, launched in 2010. Smooth, full flavoured and balanced, it has a crispy malt fruit finish. Legend is golden brown in colour with an aroma of fresh baked bread and a hint of spice.

Seasonals and specials

Dragon’s Breath (4.4% ABV)
Flavoured with black treacle, Dragon’s Breath is a unique winter warmer that was launched in the snows of December 2010. Deep ruby brown coloured, rich and full-bodied, with a delicious aftertaste of morello cherries, it is available from October to April.

Three Hares (4.4% ABV)
A delicious golden brown ale with a rich spicy taste of Dartmoor heather honey and a hint of apricots. Three Hares is made only with Dartmoor heather honey, which is in short supply, limiting the availability of the two jars required to create every cask of this award-winning beer.
