No Frills Joe

Dreamland (4.5% ABV, can)
Hazy straw with a white head that stays well, this brew offers a big burst of lemon citrus and pine on th aroma as you crack the can open. It has a good body, smooth, with plenty of that citrus, plus tropical flavours of mango and passiofruit, against a light biscuit malt background. A good example of a session IPA in the West Coast style.

Ernest (4.5% ABV, can)
A good showcase for the British hop Ernest, grown by Hukins Hops, in Kent. Hazy straw, with a white head that stays well, there are earthy, spicy hops on the aroma, with an edge of tartness. On the palate, it’s quite zingy and fruity, mostly pineapple and stone fruit, with some sweet malt balance. There’s a cracking bitterness on the finish, though.

Joe Solo (5.5% ABV, can)
Hopped with Simcoe, and don’t you know it as the can fizzes open. Piney, citrussy, and earthy, it smells very inviting. It pours slightly hazy golden with an insistent white head. On the palate — boom! Simcoe. Pine gives way to intense fruitness, citrus and tropical flavours. There’s a decent body and good biscuit malt to support the hops. It’s a good flavour, but you’d need to really like Simcoe to drink a lot!

Joe Solo

Lockdown Joe (4.8% ABV, can)
Hazy gold with a good sized white head, this has a spicy, herbal aroma which isn’t too assertive. On the palate, it’s a very smooth pale ale, good body, with notes of berries and a hint of orange. A good biscuit malt backbone, in fact the malt is very satisfying. And there’s a good, fruity, bitter finish. The beer’s designed as a showcase for the Kentish hop Bullion, and if I was the grower (Hukins Hops) I’d be pretty happy with it.

Not Another Lager (4.8% ABV, can)
I had this after a long walk and it was cracking refreshment! Hazy yellow, with good carbonation and a lovely white head, there are herabl, spicy hops, with a honey sweetness, on the nose. The honey ramps up on the palate — any more would be too much — but it’s kept in check by those peppery hops. There’s a grainy mouthfeel and a good body.

No Frills Joe Not Another Lager

Wheat (4% ABV, can)
Hazy sand in colour, this has a good sized white head. There’s that proper wheat beer aroma, banana and cloves — so distinctive. An excellent tasting hefeweizen, with a cereally malt pofile, that spiciness, and good fuitiness — tangy lemon and a hint of orange rind. Style nailed, I’d say.
