Despite the cost of living crisis, more than a third of consumers in Wales say they value memorable experiences over saving money when going to a bar or restaurant.

Almost a quarter (21%) value the experience of visiting a bar or restaurant more now than before the rise in the cost of living. And two in five (19%) are now seeking out hospitality venues where they know they will have a great experience and hospitality, so they can be sure to get the most out of their visit.

The research was carried out by payments company Dojo, which says the key to creating memorable experiences is sleek and friendly service, as cited by 79% of its respondents.

In fact, almost a third (28%) claimed they would look for an alternative bar or restaurant and likely not return if it looked as though it would take too long to get served or settle the bill.

When going out, Welsh consumers favour earlier trips to bars and pubs to avoid lengthy queues, with only 1% of Welsh pub-goers preferring to go after 10pm. Nearly four in ten (39%) consumers said they prefer to go to pubs and bars when it’s quieter and less crowded.

To address this, two in five (19%) say a more efficient experience including faster payments and fewer queues would make them go to pubs and bars outside this time.

“Although easy to overlook, our research shows us how important slick payments are as part of visiting the pub,” said Dojo’s head of research and market insights, Jon Knott.

“Whether you’re a small, local pub, or part of a large chain, creating the best experience for your customers is the lifeblood of any successful hospitality business.”
