Kendal-based Lakes Brew Co has taken a major step in reducing its carbon footprint with the installation of a solar power system.

The team took the decision earlier this year to try to make the brewery a little lighter on the environment. Conscious that the brewing process and many elements that goes with it are hugely energy hungry, they needed to try to do more.
With the help of MJ Quinn Solar, they have just finished installing a 114 solar panels on the brewery roof. The 51kWh system will reduce the brewery’s energy consumption by 50% at its peak. It will also reduce the carbon dioxide output by nine tons a year — the equivalent of planting 141 trees every year.
To invest in their future, not only as a business but from an environmental point of view, was an easy one, said Michelle Gay, co-founder and creative director of Lakes Brew Co.
“Where we live and work is massively dependent on natural beauty and outdoor spaces, and for us to try and preserve this for future generations is something we will always try and achieve,” she said.
“From the start we were very conscious in reducing our plastic usage, such as pumpclips and packaging, so this is great to be able to keep that ethos moving.”
