Borough Barrow

Beer writer Pete Brown, who has strong connections with the Borough area through his book, Shakespeare’s Local, drinks a pint of Borough Barrow with Sara Headworth, who came up with the name for the beer

Borough Market has Christened its first ever bitter, Borough Barrow, following a nationwide search to find the perfect name to mark the site’s 1,000th anniversary.

Borough Barrow bottlesThe #BrandtheBrew competition received more than 100 entries, but it was Sara Headworth, from Worthing, who came out on top, with the public voting for Borough Barrow as the winning name. The beer, brewed using hops grown, dried and harvested on site, was created to celebrate the market’s 1,000th anniversary this year.

Sara said: “I have been a fan of Borough Market since I can remember so the opportunity to make my mark in history and name the first ever Borough bitter was something I didn’t want to miss out on. The name sums up the spirit of Borough, connecting Londoners to the countryside and the provenance of their food.”

To celebrate winning the competition, Sarah was invited to pull the first pint of Borough Barrow at The Globe pub, alongside beer writer Pete Brown.

Borough Market managing director, Keith Davis, said: “Southwark has a rich history of brewing, having once been home to the world’s largest brewery, so it made sense for Borough to launch its own anniversary beer to mark 1,000 years in the area. We were inundated with clever, witty and unique names, but left it to the public to select their favourite. Borough Barrow is a fitting name for our craft bitter.”

Borough Barrow has been designed into the official bottle labels and appears on the pumpclips at The Rake and The Globe where it will be on sale to the public.
