Hop merchant Simply Hops has announced the return of its Underdog brewing competition, challenging entrants to create a stunning beer that showcases a particular hop.

Open to brewers across Europe, in Scandinavia and South Africa, the competition challenges brewers to make a pale ale style beer that shows what can be done when using one of those unappreciated, forgotten hops that are bursting with potential.

So those well used and popular hops that everyone loves so much — Amarillo, Ekuanot, Citra, Galaxy, Mosaic or Simcoe — are banned. This year’s star of the show — which has to comprise at least 50% of the hop addition — is Mandarina Bavaria.

This year, the Underdog prize fund has been upgraded from £2,000 to £12,500! This includes £2,500 cash for the winner’s brewery and a £10,000 travel fund so they can join Simply Hops throughout the year on some all-expenses-paid trips to the greatest craft industry events around.

Simply Hops will also make sure that the winner and their brewery get regular exposure at as many events as possible. It’s all about brewing skills, creativity and dedication to flavour.

All one must do to enter is go to www.underdogbrewcomp.beer and register for the competition before January. Then, entrants will be sent a one-time use code that allows them to buy up to 25kg of Mandarina Bavaria with 40% off (should they wish to purchase theirr hops from Simply Hops). After that, brew a beer and send it back with a completed submission form by March 16.
