Sharp’s Brewery will once again be sponsoring the annual Padstow to Rock swim, on July 27, with several of its team members participating in the gruelling challenge.

The event is raising money for Marie Curie, a charity that cares for people living with a terminal illness, and their families.

Last year’s event raised £85,665 in support of Marie Curie nurses in Cornwall, and this year participants are invited back in an attempt to collectively top this in the epic one-mile open-water swim across the Camel Estuary.

The Padstow to Rock Swim was started in the early 1970s when Sarah Hawkins persuaded friends and family to swim across the Camel Estuary to raise money for charity. Since then, the event has grown massively and is today run by a local swim committee with the help of the main four sponsors: Sharp’s Brewery, The Seafood Restaurant, The Metropole Hotel and Mariners Lettings.

Sharp’s Brewery will be donating the t-shirts that the swimmers receive once they have completed the hugely-rewarding challenge, as well as beer for spectators at the event. Money from each pint sold will go directly to Marie Curie.

Valuable sponsors

Sharp’s Brewery’s senior brand manager, James Nicholls, said: “The Padstow to Rock swim is such an integral part of the local community calendar here in North Cornwall, and we are once again honoured to provide support alongside the other valuable sponsors.

“The volunteer and support team, together with the Marie Curie team, provide time and expertise needed to make this happen each year and we’d encourage anyone to come down to experience the brilliant atmosphere on the day.”

In addition to sponsoring the event through providing t-shirts and beer, Sharp’s Brewery is also entering its very own team of three to the race itself. The Sharp’s team (pictured above) is made up of Ali Burgess (events co-ordinator), Aaron McClure (technical brewer) and Barry Mills (quality and food safety manager), who are all currently gearing up for the swim and encouraging sponsorship.

The Padstow to Rock Swim kicks off at 5pm on July 27 for the elite category, and 5.30pm for the non-elites. Entries for the charity swim follow a ballot system, and although the non-elite category is now full, there are still a few places remaining for those who wish to enter the elite category.
