Cornwall’s Sharp’s Brewery has won the top award in the best-selling ale category at Inapub’s Indies’ Choice Awards 2019, with Doom Bar, the UK’s top-selling cask ale.

The award organisers survey independent pub owners to find out who their preferred brands, equipment, and suppliers are. The survey is sent out to more than 20,000 people in the industry and the questions are open-ended, giving respondents the opportunity to write any brand of their choosing. Doom Bar is the brand the licensees sell the most of.

The beer is inspired by its namesake, the treacherous sandbank at the mouth of the Camel Estuary, near Sharp’s home in Rock. Doom Bar is consistent, balanced and moreish.

Sharp’s Brewery now has a tally of more than 90 international brewing awards, which last year included five medals at the Drinks Business Awards, five medals at the International Beer Challenge, and two medals at the World Beer Challenge.

The brewer’s senior brand manager, James Nicholls, said: “We’re delighted that independent bar owners across the country have recognised Doom Bar as their best seller in these awards. We’re always thrilled that Doom Bar tops the UK’s cask ale sales figures, especially as we don’t own any pubs (apart from The Mariners in Rock), but awards like these are extra special as they are voted for by the people who are on the front line of beer sales. We’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the independent pub and bar operators who voted for Doom Bar, from all at Sharp’s.”
